Man Utd Shirts 1950-1959
The 1950's was a major decade in the history of Manchester United as disaster struck in February 1958 as the Munich Air Disaster wiped out one of the most talented teams in football. Eight players from the Busby Babes were killed as their plane crashed when returning from a European quarter-final tie against Red Star Belgrade. United fashioned the traditional red top, white shorts and black socks throughout the 50's with the V neck collar design taking over the button up shirt, half way through the decade. Two FA Cup Final shirts were produced too - the white away colours versus Aston Villa and the red strip against Bolton Wanderers, a year later. The 50's shirts have been recreated and are popular retro tops you can still order online today. On this page you can find every United shirt worn between 1950 to 1959.

As well as the white-collar button up red jersey, United also wore this V-necked classic strip for some games during the 1955-56 season. The kit became a permanent choice during the 1956-57 season by the Busby Babes. Whilst normally worn with white 'knickers' and black socks the kit consisted of red shirt, red shorts and red socks when United met Real Madrid in the 1956-57 European Cup Semi-Final.

After winning the League title, The Busby Babes were favourites to become the first club to clinch the double since the 1800's. But a controversial challenge on United's Ray Wood left the goalkeeper concussed and with a broken cheekbone. Down to 10-men, with Jackie Blanchflower in goal and Duncan Edwards in the middle of the defence, United were beaten 2-1 by Aston Villa despite a goal from Tommy Taylor. This was the white away strip they wore that day. They wore all white 'knickers' and socks.

1958 - Manchester United FA Cup Final shirt

Just 3 months after the Munich Air Disaster, United returned to Wembley in this red kit for the 1958 FA Cup Final. All the sympathies were with a makeshift United side, whose hopes rested on Munich survivors Bobby Charlton, Dennis Violet, Bill Foulkes and Harry Gregg. Unfortunately, their opponents that day, Bolton Wanderers, had other ideas and beat United 2-0 in one of the most controversial finals ever.
