ManchesterTheatres.com Award for Best Production
Despite the media doom and gloom about the recession, 2009 was the most succesful year ever for Manchester theatre with the huge West End productions of Mary Poppins and The Sound Of Music hitting town. The biggest show of the year came in the form of Queen, Ben Elton & Robert DeNiro's We Will Rock You, performing for the first ever time in Britain outside of London, with an appearance from Brian May and Roger Taylor surprising an audience that included Robbie Williams. Not to be outspent, the multi-million pound Walking With Dinosaurs amazed a sell-out MEN Arena whilst White Christmas became The Lowry's most successful ever production. Critics raved over Brenda Blethyn's performance in Haunted at The Royal Exchange and Rufus Wainwright's Prima Donna, as part of the Manchester International Festival, and the 24:7 Theatre Festival continued to showcase loads of great new productions.
2,184 members nominated 64 different productions with the final shortlist (in alphabetical order) being...

~ Blood Brothers ~
Willy Russell’s hit musical is always a favourite amongst ManchesterTheatres.com readers and the October production at The Opera House was so popular that it's been voted on to our shortlist for Best Production in 2009.
Following two twins, seperated at birth, and set in Thatcher's Britain with unemployment at an all time low, comparisons were easy to draw with the current recession - albeit people didn't spend as much going to the theatre back then and they certainly wouldn't have texted friends on their iPhones and Blackberrys on the way out to proclaim how good the production was.
Mancunian actress Lyn Paul was amazing in the role as Mrs Johnstone whilst the rest of the cast were critically acclaimed as being amongst the best the show had ever seen - some statement seeing as the show is hailed as 'The Musical For All Time' and now the longest running musical on London's West End.

~ Dorian Gray ~
This amazing dance production at The Lowry was so well received that it won enough votes to make the shortlist for Best Production in Manchester 2009.
Matthew Bourne's dark and somewhat sexual adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s 'The Picture of Dorian Gray', was his finest moment yet.
Like his previous interpretation of Edward Scissorhands, his modern take on the 1890 classic novel appealed to both regular dance enthusiasts and first time audiences alike.

~ Mary Poppins ~
With over 24,000 ticket sales, Mary Poppins at The Palace Theatre was the second biggest seller on Manchester Theatres.com last year and scored sackfuls of votes for Best Production in 2009 as a result.
The Disney & Cameron McIntosh musical, based upon the stories by PL Travers and the Disney film, was choreographed by Matthew Bourne and starred Lisa O’Hare as everybody's favourite Supernanny.
Enjoying a sell-out run from December 2008 right through to March 2009, the delightful musical was a multi-million pound supercalifragilisticexpialidocious not-to-missed highlight of Manchester's theatre calendar.

~ Walking With Dinosaurs -
The Live Experience ~
Never before has Manchester seen such a captivating visual spectacle as, after 65 million years, dinosaurs were seemingly brought back to life to amaze audiences at the MEN Arena in the must-see show of the year.
Not surprisingly, the £10 million spectacle, made in association with the BBC, was the MEN's Arena biggest-selling show of 2009 and featured over 20 life-sized dinosaurs moving around the arena floor, loudly roaring and interacting with one another and frightening the living daylights out of many.

~ We Will Rock You ~
When Brian May and Roger Taylor took to the stage at The Palace Theatre, on the opening night of Ben Elton and Robert DeNiro's Queen musical, the packed audience which included Robbie Williams and Ant & Dec went wild. It was a stella moment that will probably never be matched again in Manchester's theatre history.
Twelve sell-out weeks later, during which ManchesterTheatres.com sold over 30,000 tickets, it will also be remembered as one of the most successful shows ever to visit Manchester.
With Queen now out-selling any other artist in the UK, it's no surprise that the multi-million pound West End production, set in the future and starring Jonathan Wilkes, Kevin Kennedy, X Factor star Brenda Edwards and Roger Taylor's son Rufus Tiger on drums, was voted into the shortlist as Best Production in Manchester during 2009.
