Pride Of Manchester Awards 2009-10

Manchester Comedy Guide Award for Best Comedy Show
2009 was another amazing year for comedy in Manchester with the likes of Michael McIntyre, Eddie Izzard and Russell Howard all enjoying massive gigs at the MEN Arena, whilst huge names playing sell-out runs elsewhere in town included Ricky Gervais, Al Murray and last year's winner, Jimmy Carr. Local boys done good included Jason Manford, John Bishop, Dave Spikey and, cycling back into town, Dave Gorman. The theatre productions of Porridge and Allo Allo had audiences in stitches at The Lowry, as did Brendan O'Carroll's new How Now Mrs Brown Cow, whilst the Fawlty Towers Dining Experience added a hilarious twist to eating out.
2,106 members nominated 41 different comedy shows with the final shortlist (in alphabetical order) being...

~ Dave Gorman ~
Having cycled from his birthtown of Stoke earlier in the day to Manchester, where he studied at University and started his comedy career, the 'thinking man's comedian' rode his bike directly on to the stage at The Lowry.
Part of a 32 night tour that saw him cycle a total of 1600 miles in between 32 gigs, the 'Sit Down, Pedal, Pedal, Stop And Stand Up' show at The Lowry was so popular that the Genius star has added extra Manchester dates in 2010, albeit travelling by car and renaming the tour 'Sit Down, Pedal, Pedal, Stop And Stand Up (Only Without The Pedal, Pedal Bit)'.
Unlike his 'Are You Dave Gorman?' and 'Googlewhack' shows, this was just straight-up stand-up comedy and, of all the jokes we heard in 2009, his "Unlike other comedians, I don't have a catchphrase... WHAT DON'T I HAVE?" pun was one of our favourites, and obviously our members too as he's made the shortlist.

~ Jason Manford ~
Having already performed earlier in the year at The Comedy Store, The Lowry and The Met in Bury, the Manchester comedian and 8 out of 10 Cats team captain recorded his two Manchester Apollo shows in September for DVD.
With his trademark cheeky story-telling and loveable, friendly delivery, he takes the audience on a tour de force of observational humour, through the rules of driving, urinal etiquette, and the lies Dads tell. This is Mancunian comedy at its absolute very best!

~ Michael McIntyre ~
There can be no doubting that the middle-class Londoner was the the comedy sensation of 2009. His incredible rise in popularity saw him go from playing small comedy clubs to three sell-out nights at the MEN Arena seemingly overnight, entertaining 48,000 Mancunians in the process.
His observational comedy is arguably second-to-none and in this show (the London gig of the same tour is available to buy on DVD), he jokes about womens' dress sizes, Sky+, Nintendo Wii, Dragons Den and Swine Flu, which had gripped the UK at the time.
Tongue-in-cheek he even questions why people would pay to watch him live in the huge arena rather than watching the DVD in the comfort of their own homes when, in effect, all they do is watch him on the big screens above the stage.

~ Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow ~
When we offered free tickets to see the first of Michael McIntyre's comedy roadshows, recorded live for the BBC, we received over 12,000 requests. Sadly, the Apollo only held 2,700 on the night.
And what a night it was... Michael McIntyre made hilarious observations of Manchester before introducing each surprise guest. Sarah Millican added some Geordie humour, Mick Ferry a Manc slant, and John Bishop told of being a scouser living in Manchester before Jason Manford ended the night, having his hometown audience in stitches.

~ Rob Brydon ~
The loveable Welsh comedian, star of Marion & Geoff, Gavin & Stacey, QI and long-time writing partner of Steve Coogan, was so popular in Manchester during 2009 that he performed three sell-out gigs throughout the year at The Palace Theatre and Opera House.
Mixing witty audience interaction with a set-list of hilarious observational jokes and impressions of Al Pacino and women's mobile phones hidden deep inside their handbags, there was even time for a sing-a-long to 'Islands In The Stream', featuring a guest appearance from Peter Kay.
A DVD of the tour was recorded in Norwich and is a must-see for anybody who didn't get chance to go to any of the Manchester dates. Those that did, will no doubt already have bought the DVD and can't wait for the next visit of the true comic genius.
