Pride Of Manchester Award for Best Venue

Manchester boasts an unrivaled selection of modern arenas, theatres, concert halls and comedy clubs, all of which we've been proud to sell almost 300,000 tickets for in 2008. This year we've introduced a new award for the venue our 17,000 members like best.
1879 members voted for 34 different venues in the Manchester region with the 2008-09 final shortlist being:

The Bridgewater Hall

The Bridgewater Hall

The 2,341 seater Bridgewater Hall, home to the Halle Orchestra, has become Manchester's prestigious international concert hall since opening it's doors in 1996. The stunning design and marvellous acoustics make it a favourite classical & opera venue.

The Lowry Lyric Theatre

The Lowry - Lyric Theatre

The impressive 1,730 seater Lyric is the largest of the 3 theatres at The Lowry in Salford Quays and is host to to everything from West End plays to International dance groups, family shows to famous comedians, touring live rock bands to famous opera productions.

The Lowry Quays Theatre

The Lowry - Quays Theatre

The intimate atmosphere of the 466 seater Quays Theatre at The Lowry in Salford Quays makes it ideal for hosting touring folk musicians, stand-up comedy and theatre productions. The tiered gallery seating offers great views for all theatre goers.

Manchester Apollo

Manchester Apollo

The 3,500 capacity Apollo Theatre in Ardwick remains popular with touring groups and comedians too big for the Academy but not big enough to fill the MEN Arena. It remains popular with fans (many members voted for it) despite being built in 1930.

MEN Arena

Manchester Evening News Arena

Despite opening as far back as 1995, The 22,000 capacity MEN Arena remains the largest indoor concert venue in Europe and has remained the favourite destination for biggest stars in the world of music and comedy, despite the arrival of the O2 in London.

ManchesterTheatres.com Award for Best Production in 2008

2008 was an eventful year in Manchester's theatres with some big names starring in Manchester productions. Nigel Havers headlined in Single Spies, Wayne Sleep reprised in Cabaret, Brenda Blethyn conveyed in The Glass Menagerie, Patricia Routledge starred in Crown Matrimonial, Stephen Tompkinson impressed in Revenger's Tragedy, John Savident was at home in Hobson's Choice, Maxine Peake won all the plaudits in Children's Hour, Marti Pellow starred in Witches Of Eastwick, Anita Dobson and Darren Day appeared in Hello Dolly, David Essex popped up twice in Aspects Of Love and All The Fun Of The Fair, whilst Calendar Girls featured an all-star cast including Lynda Bellingham, Patricia Hodge, Sian Phillips, Brigit Forsyth, Gaynor Faye, Julia Hills and Elaine Smith. Afrika! Afrika! stunned audiences at The Trafford Centre whilst Ladyboys Of Bangkok entertained another tent on Sackville Street. Le Grande Cirque and Chinese Acrobatic Circus also offered more flexible entertainers with the wow factor.
1762 members of Pride Of Manchester & UK Theatre Guides voted for 58 different productions. With the 2008-09 final shortlist being:

2007-08 Winner
MONKEY - JOURNEY TO THE WEST

Manchester International Festival's ground-breaking production from Chen Shi-zheng, Damon Albarn & Jamie Hewlett

Afrika! Afrika (Trafford Centre)

André Helle probably chose the wrong time of year to bring his amazing Afrika! Afrika show to Manchester, as the summer holidays meant that many people missed out an incredible show. That said, plenty of you voted for this non-stop troupe of over 100 African artists, eccentrics, dancers, singers and musicians, who all had that special something. The circus theatre located in the Trafford Centre's car park offered unbelievable acrobatics, intoxicating rhythms and costumes of exceptional beauty to earn the tag 'The African Cirque du Soleil'.

Edward Scissorhands (The Lowry)

Matthew Bourne's fantastic adaptation of the magical Tim Burton and Johnny Depp movie was a favourite in 2007 and it's return to The Lowry in 2008, polled even more votes amongst Pride Of Manchester and UK Theatre Guides members to see it reach the shortlist, the only dance production to do so. The play without words is an amazing piece of theatre and a must-see if it returns in 2009.

Footloose The Musical

Footloose The Musical (Opera House)

Based on the 1980's movie which launched the careers of Kevin Bacon, Sarah Jessica Parker and Jon Lithgow, the musical of Footloose won plenty of your votes as it came to Manchester in November. The high energy, all singing, all dancing production had you dancing in the aisles and singing along to favourites like 'Holding Out For A Hero', 'Almost Paradise', 'Lets Hear It For The Boy' and of course 'Footloose'

Hobsons Choice

Hobson's Choice (The Lowry)

John Savident based his character Fred Elliot in Coronation Street on Charles Laughton's superb portrayal of Henry Hobson in the 1953 movie. For that reason, it was no surprise he was as home playing the cantankerous and obstinate Hobson in The Lowry's production of the classic Harold Brighouse tale of the 1880's Salford bootmaker. Loads of you loved this version of one of the greatest Manchester tales ever told.

Mary Poppins (Palace Theatre)

The Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious West End musical of the famous book and film won 5 star reviews across the board when it opened in Manchester in December. The multi-million pound production from Disney and Cameron McKintosh performs at The Palace Theatre until 7th March 2009, however many of you have already seen it and voted for it as the best production in 2008. With many national theatre critics describing it as one of the best theatre performances ever, what's the odds on it making in to next year's shortlist too?
