Shaandaar
Indian Restaurant Manchester - reader comments
|
"Cannot
believe the difference in the service and food between
this visit and the last one. We were told the salad
and Poppadoms were free then charged for salad. We
were charged for drinks we didn't have
and even when queried still insisted that the bill
was correct. Upon page by page query proved they were
wrong. Several dishes were unavailable,
not even told about one dessert until one came out
and the other never did. The wait for the dessert
took 25 minutes and had to call the waiter over to
order that. The first visit we were given free coffee,
nothing this time even though there was the issue
with the bill, only the cost of the drink plus approx
30p was deducted, not even a free coffee offered.
Thought the Pearl at Audenshaw was expensive before
but now realise it is not, you get what you pay for!"

"I
used to go to this restaurant quite often with a group
when I was a student in Manchester. Now I live in
Bangor in North Wales, I always make sure that I go
to the Shaandaar when I'm back in Manchester. If you've
not tried a curry house in Manchester, I would
suggest this one. You probably won't go anywhere
else after!" -
Paul Hughes, Bangor 11/5/07 (visited on a Sat evening)

"Excellent
in every way. Very attentive staff
and the food was of high quality.
The balance of spice and flavour was perfect.
My wife's lamb roasti was particularly good and the
Peshwari nan was the best we've ever had - would go
nicely on its own with dessert wine! Prices
very reasonable and the ability to take your
own booze is a big plus. This will now become our
regular place for a curry." -

"Having
gone to this restaurant for over 14 years we booked
a table on Valentines evening for our wedding anniversary.
The front of the restaurant was done up nicely with
balloons and confetti on the tables. We were given
a seat at the very back of the restaurant where we
sat for over ten minutes waiting to order
drinks etc.
After this time we decided to leave.
Over the years we have had many family meals at this
restaurant and had expected to be treated a little
better than this. The waiter motioned to Khan that
we were leaving and he just turned his back on us.
Our wedding anniversary meal was ruined. We have gone
to this restaurant since the first day it opened and
had probably spent a bob or two there.
Never mind, Indian restaurants are ten a penny on
Wilmslow Road and we now dine at the Sangam which
is a much nicer, cleaner restaurant where Mukki makes
us feel welcome. My only gripe with ALL the restaurants
on Wilmslow Road is that they do not cater
for disabled people, with no ramp
access and no toilets on the ground floor
- Please take note!!!!" -

notch place. Khan the head waiter is a gent.
You are always made very welcome!"

"I agree with Matthew's comments below, this is an
average Indian restaurant that's not a patch
on the city centre offerings or some others on the Curry
Mile. The service is very friendly and helpful
and makes up for the brown lettuce,
soggy poppadoms, overcooked
lamb skewers and dodgy toilets.
The corma however was very tasty.
Reading the number of outstanding reviews on both this
website and others, they obviously seem to have a fanbase
of loyal regulars or a number of 'imaginary' customers."

| "I
have been visiting the Shaandaar for over 10 years.
I've never had a bad curry, we take
all our friends including visitors from America New
Zealand and Germany, they all love it. We are even planning
to take out two year old there for his first curry!."

| "I
have visited the Shaandaar many many times over the
years. I always made a point of dining there when working
within a 50 mile radius. I have yet to find
another restaurant that I actually miss when
I have not visited for a while. Makes me feel hungry!."

"I
first went to the Shaandaar with some friends over 10
years ago, not long after I moved to Manchester. Even
back then I was hugely impressed with the place - the
service was top notch, the staff
were extremely friendly, the atmosphere
was great....but first and foremost, the curry
was absolutely fantastic (and after all, that's
why you go to a curry house isn't it?!?). Of all the
times I've been there (and believe me, there have been
a few) I've never once had a bad dish, and that's an
impressive record in my book! Consequently whenever
we go out for a curry these days, it's always the Shaandaar
that's top of the list. And to be honest, nothing has
changed in terms of quality....it's still as good as
it was the first time; in fact, it might even be slightly
better!
Khan is a great guy - always goes out of his way to
make you feel welcome, nothing is too much trouble and
he's always happy to run through the list of specials
and explain what they all are (which is a good job as
I always forget!).
So if you're in Manchester and need a curry, don't even
think of going anywhere else - it has to be the Shaandaar,
every time! They even give you free popadums
and chutney to start with...what more could
you ask for?!?" -

| "We
have used this restaurant a number of times over the
years, and only ever eat there in Rusholme, because
the manager Khan and staff are so cool.
The specials are great, and you can
have them to whatever strength you require. And Khan
never tires of telling us which specials are which.
It is definitely the best Indian restaurant
I have ever been to. It's good to go somewhere
where you really feel like they are your pals."

Andy Bradshaw, Sale 9/3/07 (visited on a Thurs evening)

| "This
is the best Indian restaurant around
- excellent personal service, great
range, really tasty food cooked to
your taste (after expert recommendations!). I've been
going for over 10 years and wouldn't go anywhere else
locally." -
Andy, Lymm 9/3/07 (visited on a Thurs evening) |

| "We
eat at the Shaan Daar every Thursday, and have done for
a few years now. Khan and the lads are very
friendly and attentive and even remember birthdays
and the like. We have tried other places along the curry
mile but would recommend the Shaan Daar unconditionally."

| "Smart
new paint job, same friendly welcome,
superb food as always. Khan genuinely
seemed pleased to see us after not having eaten there
for a while. Their paneer tikka is the best
paneer dish I have ever had and I've tried
quite a few! Won't leave it as long between visits again."

| "Had
a great night and meal. Myself my wife and
4 friends went for our birthday celebration. The
manager was great we were seated in resonable
time given that they were really busy and we didnt make
a reservation. the choice is fantastic
and extensive with a few dishes even I didnt know and
the waiters are happy to give a description. It was
the best meal and time i have had in ages." -

"Having read loads of great reviews of Shandaar on this
website, I'd thought I'd give it a visit. The manager,
presumably called Khan, greeted us warmly and passed
us to one of the team to be sat down. This is where
an honest review is needed. Aside from the warm
welcome, helpful staff and extensive cheap menu,
Shandaar's is nothing special. Paper
table cloths and napkins, brown lettuce, soggy poppadoms,
very old premises and dodgy toilets seem to
be missing from other descriptions. My curry, a Godzilla,
was tasty but nowhere near the quality you'd
find in top Indian restaurants in the city centre.
That said the place seemed to popular with students
and parties getting loudly drunk on their 'bring your
own' booze." -
Matthew, Manchester 24/2/07 (visited on a Fri evening)

|
| "My
family has been visiting the Shaandaar for many years,
the staff are always incredibly friendly and
helpful and the manager especially will go
out of his way to make time for conversation and to
make sure that everything is okay for us. I haven't
been for a few months since living in London and the
thought of going back is making my mouth water. As usual
I will order a Muki starter and eat far too much of
everything, as the food is superb." -
Ellen Goldstone, London 16/2/07 (visited on a Thu evening)

|
| "We
have been going for years and my parents know Khan well.
Shandaar is the only place we go in Rusholme. We live
an hour away but if we fancy a really nice curry,
it's the only place to go. My dad is always
really annoying and asks them to make him a random dish
with anything they want in it. They never seem to mind,
in fact I think they quite enjoy it." -

"We
have just moved to Manchester and love our Indian
food, I found the Shaandaar on Restaurants Of Manchester
and read the reviews. I can say after visiting I agree
with the reviews whole heartidly, the food
was fantastic, the place was very tidy. I
have to say the service was fantastic,
the manager made himself known and was more than happy
to have a chat, he was proud of his restaurant and
rightly so, what a superb place to go and eat, service
was second to none." -

"Second
time eating at the Curry Mile while at work in Mancs.
Last time went to Shere Khans and thought it was
ok. Absolutely loved Shaandar.
Khan recommended a great dish from their specials
and my colleagues had excellent food
too. Will defo go again next time we are in town."

"I
have visited this particular restaurant for several
years, I have never had a bad meal or a bad
word to say for it. Last night I took some
relatives from Holland and they loved it, the staff
made them really welcome. Top notch this
place." -
Derek Meace, Bolton 21/8/06 (visited on a Sunday evening) |

"I
have been going to the Shandar for many years and the
staff and food can't be beaten... I
even drive 7 miles for the take out as nowhere
locally to me can compare with the quality.
Khan, Naz and Archie always make me very welcome and
nothing is too much trouble. I can't believe
the prices as in Stockport for a meal for 4
people would cost me twice as much again but the
quality and taste would be hard to beat. I
can't sing their praises too much.
The best thing was that I had eaten for many years at
a place not 50 yards away and I asked an Asian
friend where he ate on Wilmslow Road and he said The
Shandar. I took his recommendation and he was
right. I've eaten in many places on Wilmslow Road since
but have never had as good a meal as at The Shandar."

"As
we walked on the curry mile, we noticed that a lot of
the restaurants were quiet, as we walked to Shaandaar
to our amazement it was busy, so we decided to go in.
As we walked in we got a very welcome from the manager
Mr Khan. The atmosphere was buzzing,
before we sat down to our table, popadums, chutney,
salad and the menu were on the table, we were very impressed
by that.
All the way through the meal even though the restaurant
was very busy we didnt feel neglected, the service
was amazingly impressive. Mr Khan recommended
some special dishes (specials of Shaandaar only) which
were out of this world.
It was my Mum's 50th birthday, after the meal they switched
the light off, Mr Khan and the Shaandaar choir sang
Happy Birthday to my Mum, amazingly half the restaurant
joined in and it made my Mum's day. We had an
exellent time, food was brilliant and so was the service.
As far as restaurants go we dont need to look futher"

| "Well
as we arrived we were greeted very nicely by the manager,
atmosphere was brilliant and the staff was
superb, made us feel very good and even had
laughs with the staff. The food was very delicious,
will be comming here from now. Nowhere else" -
Daniel Burton, Rochdale 8/8/06 (visited on a Thursday

|
| "We
go regularly for family meals, brothers, sisters, in
laws and kids, the staff always greet us as old friends
(especially Khan). You can take your own drinks
including alcohol, and the choice of
food is great, the waiters will explain
ingredients and flavours of a curry you may
wish to try. We tried many places in Rusholme before
we found The Shandaar, now we never go anywhere else.
If you go for a celebration, take a cake and the staff
will dim the lights and give a unique rendition of Happy
Birthday. Brilliant" -
