Nobody
could have ever predicted how popular Deansgate Locks has
become, especially after the Hacienda, which used to stand
proudly at the end of the street, closed down.
The railway arches behind
the G-Mex provide a fantastic collection of canal side bars.
This is where the city's in-crowd hang out - in the likes
of Loaf, Sugar Lounge, The If Bar, Fat Cats and Revolution.
Pretentious but worth it!

| Aqua |
| 14
Albion Street, Albion Wharf, Manchester. Tel. 0161 228 1800
|
| Popular
club that plays Manchester classics such as the Roses and
the Mondays. Although it is just around the corner from
Deansgate Locks, the atmosphere and clientele is totally
different. Relaxed, no pretentiousness, no thrills and friendly. |
 |
|
| City
Road Inn |
| 14
Albion Street, Manchester. Tel. 0161 236 3820
|
| Famous
bar located opposite the spot where The Hacienda once stood
so proud. Offers a completely different type of place to
the trendy bars on Deansgate Locks across the road. |
 |
|
| Sugar
Lounge |
| Arch
12 Deansgate Locks, Whitworth Street West, M1 5LH |
|
| Without
a doubt, one of the most pretentious bars in Manchester.
It is very expensive for the average customer but then again,
the average customer would avoid or be turned away from
the Sugar Lounge. If you want to rub shoulders with the
rich and famous, there's a good chance you might spot a
few in here. |
 |
|
| Baa
Bar |
| Arch
11 Deansgate Locks, Whitworth Street West, M1 5LH |
|
| Baa
Bar originated in Liverpool (trendy name or two attempts
at spelling the word 'bar'?) It is a reliable bar on Deansgate
Locks as you usually don't have to queue to get in, the
bouncers are friendlier than most, they have drink promotions
and the decor inside (glittering balls) is fun and funky! |
 |
|
| If
bar |
| Arch
7a-9 Deansgate Locks, Whitworth Street West, M1 5LH |
|
| Previously
the Lock Bar, followed by 'The' Bar Cafe, 'If' is the new
title for this bar. The previous attempts at making this
place a success clearly didn't work. It was one of the quietest
bars on Deansgate Locks with little character. Only time
will tell whether 'If' can bring the punters in. Check it
out and judge for yourself! |
 |
|
| Fat
Cat Cafe Bar |
| Arch
8 Deansgate Locks, Whitworth Street West, M1 5LH |
|
| A
relaxing place during the day and a chance to sit outside
at the front if the Manchester weather is good to you. In
the evening, the Fat Cat Cafe Bar becomes lively with funky
music (sometimes hip-hop!) The bouncers can be selective
so dressing down might not be the best option for this joint. |
 |
|
| Revolution |
| Arch
7 Deansgate Locks, Whitworth Street West, M1 5LH |
|
| If
you love vodka - Revolution is the place to go. During the
week, like any venue in Manchester, you can enjoy a relaxing
drink, however at weekends, it can get seriously busy and
lively. If you are one of the lucky customers and you get
in earlier enough, you can enjoy the comfy seats. |
 |
|
| Loaf |
| 3a
& 5 Deansgate Locks, Whitworth Street West, M1 5LH |
|
| Like
all trendy bars, the doormen could be an obstacle when trying
to gain access to the Loaf Bar. When it first opened, it
was the place to be and the queues can still put you off
attempting to get in, especially at weekends. It's spacious
inside with a bar and restaurant upstairs and dancefloor
downstairs. |
 |
|
| The
Comedy Store |
|
3 & 4 Deansgate Locks, Whitworth Street West, M1 5LH |
|
| What
a great place! Even if you don't fancy going to see one
of the many acts on, you can still venture inside and enjoy
the bar. Depending on when you enter, it can be rammed with
happy punters enjoying the mid-session interval, or it could
be completely 'dead' at the bar as everybody is laughing
in the club itself. . |
 |
|
| Emporia |
| 2b
Whitworth Street West, Manchester. Tel 0161 236 8833 |
|
| Opened
in 2004, Emporia is a modern bar/club certainly worth the
visit. Open 10pm till 3am Thurs and 4am every Fri/Sat. There
are two major rooms - one is a full-on club experience with
top dj's playing, the other is a 'chill-out' room where
you can relax and sit back to more 'funky' music. |
 |
|
| Love
Saves The Day |
| 345
Deansgate, Manchester, M3 4LG. Tel 0161 834 2266 |
|
| A
quiet little haven with delicious food, coffee and wine
to eat in or take away. Looks more like a shop than a bar
- not your typical drinking hole in Manchester so if you
fancy something more unusual, aim for the big bike statue
nearby. |
 |
|
| Atlas |
| 376
Deansgate, Manchester, M3 4LY |
|
| Very
welcoming place, ideal for a light bite and a refreshing
drink. Great spot in the Summer months as you can sit out
at the back of Atlas on the patio, lay back and drink in
the sun. |
 |
|
| The
Knott Bar |
| 374
Deansgate, Manchester, M3 4LY |
|
| Unusual
little spot on the entrance to Castlefield. Good beer and
a good range of beers on offer. Popular with a wide range
of people, from students to locals. You can sit by the front
on the top terrace and watch the world go by. |
 |
|
| Galvin's
Bar |
| 321
Deansgate, Manchester M3 4LQ |
|
| Previously
the Crown Inn and Galvin's Irish Bar, Galvin's Bar sits
at the bottom of Deansgate. It is located on the fringe
of Castlefield and Deansgate Locks. Looks more of a local's
place but could be worth a visit if your doing a pub crawl. |
