Castlefield
is Manchester's ultimate summertime drinking venue. Unfortunatley,
due to the poularity of the new Deansgate Locks, the rest
of the year can be reasonably quiet down here now. Located
at the Southern end of the city centre, it's ideal for those
also visiting the Deansgate Locks and is in walking distance
from the G-Mex metro station and Deansgate Railway Station.
With Quay Bar, Jackson's
Wharf and the newly refurbished Barça, joining the
visionary Dukes 92, the canal basin is a fantastic place
to drink in the sun. The Ox, White Lion and Smart Bar also
make this end of town a must place to visit. |

| Dukes
92 |
|
| Castle
Street, Castlefield, Manchester. Tel. 0161 839 8646 |
|
| So
called because it is right next to lock 92 of the Rochdale
Canal. Manchester's oldest canal-side building, The Merchant's
Warehouse, was renovated to house Dukes 92 during the time
when this area of town was still a rat infested sign of
urban decay. The vision of the bar's owners, who also have
the Marc Addy, was amazing. Now an area of natural beauty
and great drinking houses, Castlefield owes much of its
success to Dukes 92. Barge trips along the canal to Manchester
United's Old Trafford ground take place on match days. |

|
| Barça |
|
| Arch
8 & 9, Catalan Square, Castlefield, Manchester. Tel. 0161
839 7099 |
|
| Recently
refurbished, Barça looks better than ever. Once part-owned
by Simply
Red's Mick Hucknall, this stylish bar is situated under
a railway arch on the Rochdale Canal and is one of the few
places in Castlefield that stays open after 11pm. |

|
| Jackson's
Wharf |
|
| Blantyre
Street, Castlefield, Manchester. Tel. 0161 819 5317 |

food and fantastic terrace seating overlooking the canal
basin. |

|
| Castle
Quay, Castlefield, Manchester. Tel. 0161 832 7775 |

| A
stylish bar and restaurant, small by definition, but with
perfect designs and cutting edge technology. Definitely
based around it's name, it offers a standard range of drink . |

|
| Quay
Bar |
|
| Deansgate
Quay, Castlefield, Manchester. Tel. 0161 839 8803 |
|
| Quay
Bar, with the possible exception of Bar 38 on Peter Street,
has to be Manchester's most impressive bar from an architectural
point of view. Purpose built at a staggering cost of £2
million, it's indoor and outdoor seating boast style and
class that helped win many international awards. Unfortunately,
the crowds don't flock here like they used to outside of
the Summer months. Great bar food and amazing drink offers
are slowly pulling the punters back to what surely deserves
to be the city's number one spot. |
 |
|
| Smart
Bar |
|
| 374
Deansgate, Manchester. Tel. 0161 832 0374 |
|
| When
entering from Deansgate, Smart Bar is situated next door
to Quay Bar, or underneath the railway arch on the cobbled
streets going down to Castlefield from Deansgate Locks.
Previously called various names, most recently Nowhere,
it has undergone vast improvement in an attempt to get the
punters in. Hopefully it will succeed where its predecessors
failed, especially as it could hold the key to moving the
crowds back from the Locks into Castlefield once more. |
 |
|
| Atlas |
|
| 376
Deansgate, Manchester. Tel. 0161 834 2124 |
|
| With
a gigantic metal bicycle parked outside, Atlas is one of
the city's most famous bars. A favourite amongst some of
the city's musicians, including Tim Booth from James and
Clint Boon from The Inspiral Carpets, this is an unpretentious
place just a stones throw from Deansgate Locks. A variety
of cask ales, bottled beers, wines and soft drinks are on
offer with a fantastic outdoor terrace at the back. |
 |
|
| The
Pack Horse |
|
| 357-361
Deansgate, Manchester. Tel. 0161 833 1677 |
|
| This
old pub at the bottom end of Deansgate,
behind Atlas, offers an alternative to the trendy wine bars
of Castlefield and The Locks
which are just around the corner. |

| Dimitri's |
|
| 1
Crampfield Avenue Arcade, Castlefield, Manchester. Tel.
0161 839 3319 |

| Located
on the crossroads of Deansgate and Liverpool Street, this
Greek restaurant is also a nice place to have a few drinks.
In warmer months you can sit in the wonderful arcade that's
hidden away from the busy Deansgate traffic. |
 |
|
| The
Pig and Porcupine |
|
| 310
Deansgate, Manchester. Tel. 0161 839 4294 |

on the corner of Deansgate and Liverpool Road, the Pig and
Porcupine is one of Manchester's most famous pubs and offers
table football. |
 |
|
| The
Ox |
|
| 71
Liverpool Road, Castlefield, Manchester. Tel. 0161 839 7740 |
|
| The
Ox (or The Oxnoble as it was once known) is unique. It's
a traditional pub that has reinvented itself into a trendy
award-winning bar and restaurant. You'll struggle to find
many better bars in town. |
 |
|
| The
White Lion |
|
| 43
Liverpool Road, Castlefield, Manchester. Tel. 0161 832 7373 |
|
| Located
opposite the Science and Industry Museum, the White Lion
is one of Manchester's finest pubs. Local beers, including
Boddingtons, join the many whiskies and cognacs on offer.
Excellent food with speciality sausages. The walls are adorned
with prints of
Manchester United, and outside seating is also available
(presumably for blues). |
