Win the 2006 Radio Ballads
October 22nd marks the 18th anniversary of the death of Salford folk legend, Ewan MacColl. Together with his tracks 'Dirty Old Town', 'The Manchester Rambler' and 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face', Ewan is best known for his ground-breaking BBC Radio Ballads of the 1950's. They were masterpieces of radio, weaving together the voices of rarely heard communities with songs written from and about the experiences of the interviewees.
In 2006, the BBC recreated the Radio Ballads documentary series, recording 6 shows tackling issues like the end of hunting, the decline of the ship and steel industries, the troubles in Northern Ireland, the fairground community and people living with HIV/AIDS. Musicians contributing to the 2006 Radio Ballads included Manchester's Michael McGoldrick alongside the likes of Kate Rusby, Cara Dillon, John McCusker, Martin Simpson, Kellie and Chris While, Julie Matthews, Karine Polwart, John Tams, Tommy Sands, Bob Fox, Barry Coope and Jez Lowe.
We've got the 6 CD Collection to give away, together with a compilation CD 'The Songs Of The Radio Ballads', which features original music and songs from the series. [click here to buy the CD's]
