Pride Of Manchester Awards 2009-10 Pride Of Manchester Awards
Tom Buckley Special Recogniton Award
Because we appreciate that the sheer volume of members who voted in the Pride Of Manchester Awards meant that some nominees were always going to struggle to win the popular vote, we have decided to introduce a new Special Recognition Award, named in honour of Tom Buckley, the 2008-09 Pride Of Manchester Mancunian of the Year, who sadly passed away in May.
Selected by the staff in our office, the award has been given to the most deserving nomination, from any of the categories in the Pride Of Manchester Awards. This year's selection was...

WINNER ~ Looking For Eric ~
Ken Loach returns to his absolute best with the film that many, including us, are calling 'the best Manchester film ever'. Filmed in the city with a cast that includes Steve Evets, John Henshaw, Gerard Kearns, Justin Moorhouse, Mick Ferry, Smug Roberts and, of course, Eric Cantona as himself.
Shortlisted at Cannes, the story follows Eric, a depressed Mancunian postman whose life has gone off the rails ever since his wife walked out on him. Things get worse as his teenage son gets mixed up with the local gangster. With the help from his mates and an apparition of his idol, Eric Cantona, he tries to rebuild his life, win his wife back and sort out his son's troubles. This is Mancunian comedy at its best mixed with Loach's trademark dark story-telling.
It's absolutely wonderful stuff that is a must-see for any proud Mancunian. You don't have to be a United fan to enjoy it, let alone a football fan... we watched it with die-hard Liverpool and City fans, as well as girl who couldn't careless. They all rated it (nearly) as highly as the reds who've seen it. C'est fantastique!

~ Tom Buckley ~
We were lucky to have met Tom Buckley when our members voted him Pride Of Manchester Mancunian Of The Year in 2009. His warmth and humour was as touching as the courage that he had become famous for.
As many of you will know, Tom died aged just 23 years old in May 2009 after raising over £100,000 for Christies by walking Coast to Coast. Sadly, he never got to complete his next challenge by cycling The Rhine from Switzerland to Holland.
This year, his friend, Christian Schneider, aims to complete a number of challenges whilst at the same time raising money for Tom's charity.
After running the London Marathon he will take on the 3 Peaks Challenge and then attempt to climb Mount Elbrus in Russia. And if that wasn't enough, in July he will cycle 3000 miles across the USA from New York to San Francisco in 50 days.
