Pride Of Manchester Awards 2009-10

Restaurants Of Manchester Award for Best Restaurant
Unlike the Members' Favourite Restaurant Award, which is voted for, the Award for Best Restaurant in Manchester is determined by the results of over 1,800 reviews submitted by our team of Trusted Reviewers and the 770,000 readers of Restaurants Of Manchester and Manchester Restaurants.com in 2009.
The final shortlist for Best Restaurant in Manchester 2009-10 being (in alphabetical order)....

Previous Winners
2008 ~ CHAOPHRAYA

~ Chaophraya ~
Previously crowned 'Best Restaurant in Manchester Restaurant' in the 2007-08 Pride Of Manchester Awards, 'Members Favourite Restaurant in 2008-09', winner of The Times 'Number One Vegetarian Restaurant in the UK' and named in the 'Top 3 Thai Restaurants in Britain' by the Guardian, the Chapel Walks restaurant is clearly one of the best (and busiest) restaurants in town.
Unbeatable prices, delicious food, an extensive menu to suit all tastes, fantastic waitresses in traditional dress and a Thai Cooking School to boot make this an obvious candidate for the award.

~ Choice ~
With one of the best locations in town, the Castlefield canal side restaurant has consistently scored rave reviews since young local chef Mark Anthony Jones took over the kitchen earlier in the year.
The independent British restaurant, with its locally sourced ingredients and amazing wine list - most available by the glass - can also pride itself for boasting the best service in town.

~ Grado ~
Paul Heathcote's incredibly stylish Spanish restaurant and Tapas Bar continues to win rave reviews.
From the moment you walk through the door, to be greeted by an impressive wine collection, you know that you're in for an upmarket, classy experience.
Grado has certainly redefined many people's expectations of Spanish food just being tapas and cheap plonk, and the reviews rightfully place it in the shortlist.

~ Linen ~
The plush Modern British restaurant hidden away inside the Manchester235 casino is one of the city's hidden gems.
Set up a sweeping stairway, well away from the gambling floor - so much so you would not realise that you are in a casino - Linen serves superb quality dishes at incredibly attractive prices. It also wins rave reviews for the fantastic service and extensive wine list.
Linen's beautiful Chef's Table private dining room is one of our top recommendations for parties or business meetings too.

~ Michael Caines at Abode ~
The 2008-09 'Restaurants Of Manchester Best Restaurant in Manchester' is perhaps the closest Manchester city centre will get to Michelin Star standard cuisine.
Executive Chef, Ian Matfin, who has previously worked at Claridges and served under Terry Laybourne, Gordon Ramsay and Raymond Blanc, as well as Michael Caines, who he works closely with on a daily basis, created one of the best set meals on offer in Manchester this year, replicating his entry for the BBC's Great British Menu.
With over 2,000 people making online reservations alone for Michael Caines through Restaurants of Manchester in 2009, it's advisable to book a table well in advance.

~ The Modern ~
One of only two establishments to be shortlisted for 'Members Favourite' and 'Best Restaurant', 'Best Bar' and 'Best Cocktail', the fantastic British restaurant and cocktail lounge at the top of the iconic Urbis building continued to score great reviews in 2009.
Customers acclaimed The Modern's reasonably priced locally sourced menu and great service together with its pre-show offer for those visiting the MEN Arena and Royal Exchange next door.
An obvious entry in the shortlist, The Modern overlooks other Manchester restaurants in more way than one.

~ Obsidian ~
After an extensive refurbishment in 2009, the lavish restaurant below the Arora Hotel on Princess Street has 2009, reopened with critically acclaimed chef Bryn Evans also overhauling the menu.
Having previously worked at the Michelin Starred Chester Grosvenor, Devonshire Arms and Juniper, his talent shines through with the food matching the great reviews of the service and new more distinguished decor.
Excellent British dishes with classic French grounding has seen Obsidian shortlisted for Best Restaurant in Manchester.

~ Sapporo Teppanyaki ~
Ignoring the theatrical cooking, the fantastic Japanese teppanyaki and sushi restaurant, opposite the Science & Industry Museum in Castlefield, serves up some of the best food in Manchester.
Just a few minutes walk to the Opera House, Sapporo is not just the ideal place for large parties or pre-theatre meals, as reviews highlight, it's also serves the best sushi in town - the Manchester Roll especially being worth the visit alone.

~ Vermilion ~
The £4.5m Thai fusion restaurant near Miles Platting, the most expensive ever built in Manchester, pulls out all the stops when it comes to impressing diners.
The jaw-dropping furnishings could be taken straight from a James Bond film set and the food is equally impressive.
As you'd expect from a restaurant owned by the UK’s leading shrimp importer, the seafood menu at Vermilion is incredible and they now offer sushi too.
With over 4,000 online table bookings alone in 2009 via Restaurants Of Manchester, Vermilion is certainly the 'destination restaurant' in Manchester.

~ Walrus Japanese Canteen ~
The Northern Quarter cocktail bar & restaurant is the only other place to be nominated for 'Members Favourite' and 'Best Restaurant', 'Best Bar' and 'Best Cocktail'.
Offering incredible Japanese/Thai fusion dishes, Walrus is more of a canteen than a restaurant and the menu is comparable to the likes of Wagamama and Tampopo. Thats the only comparison though as the fantastic reviews highlight the incredible quality of food in the most unexpected of venues.
The monthly Fifth Sense food & wine tasting sessions are well worth booking onto to experience the best Walrus has to offer.

~ Zouk Tea Bar & Grill ~
The £1m family-ran Mancunian sister of the multi-award winning Halal Indian restaurant in Bradford opened its doors at the start of 2009 and has enjoyed fantastic reviews ever since.
Reviewers acclaim the incredibly good value for money menu at Zouk, which features sumptuous curries, kebabs and even sheep brains alongside Arabian steaks, gourmet burgers and one of the best seafood selections in Manchester.
The impressive furnishings are complemented by a huge open kitchen, readdressing stereotypes of the typical curry house. The kitchen's also available to the public as Zouk offer Indian cookery schools amongst many theme nights.
