Although built in 1877, the Town Hall was designed in 13th
Century Gothic style by Albert Waterhouse and contains 12
massive murals from Ford Maddox Brown, capturing 12 moments
of Mancunian history on each. Controversially, there's no
mural of the Peterloo Masacre (although this is captured
on a mural in the nearby Britons Protection pub). |

Manchester Art Gallery houses one of the UK's finest art
collections in spectacular surroundings. The Gallery has
recently benefited from a £35m transformation and
is particularly exceptional for its 19th century British
paintings, with outstanding pictures by the great Pre-Raphaelites
and of course Ford Madox Brown, whose images
of Manchester are world famous.

quarry
bank mill and style estate
(1
vote)
|
[hotels
near quarry bank mill] |
This Georgian working water-powered
cotton mill is set on over 384 acres of the beautiful Style
estate. It still spins and weaves cotton, sold in the museum
shop. There's demonstrations of the development of the textile
industry from hand spinning to noisy weaving factory. See
a spinning jenny and a mule in action; hear and feel the
thump of the weaving shed, alongside the most powerful working
waterwheel in Europe, and one of the earliest steam-powered
beam engines. |

peel
tower & east lancashire railway (1
vote)
|
[hotels
in bury] |
A superb day out if you love walking, steam railways, picturesque
villages and pubs. Peel Tower above Ramsbottom, near Bury,
was erected over 150 years ago to celebrate the town's most
famous son, Robert Peel, Prime Minister and founder of the
police force. Although the tower itself is not always open
to the public, the view from the top of Holcombe Hill on
which it stands, is unrivalled, overlooking the whole of
Manchester, Lancashire and beyond. |
where
is it? above Ramsbottom, Bury (13 miles from Manchester)
directions: Metro to Bury (20 mins) then
East Lancashire steam railway to Ramsbottom (16mins). Once
in Ramsbottom, from Bridge Street, walk up the hill through
Market Place (past the Urn Sculpture) and on up Carr Street.
Its all up hill from here! Turn left up Tanners Street,
and then right up the even steeper 'Rake' and up the hill
into Holcombe. At the 'Shoulder of the Mutton' pub cross
the road and look for Cross Lane. Where the road forks,
go right, and soon after turn right again, up the track
that leads to the tower. |
